Our story

Kolibri Art is a family business that was launched in 2011 by Patricia Lopez and Jose Zegarra, after being inspired by many trips across the magical country of Peru and a touch of social consciousness with the aim to improve the situation of Andean Peruvian families.

IT ALL STARTED WITH THE PASSION FOR FASHION

Her passion for fashion started in very early university days back in the 80s, when handmade pullovers made of wool were very popular across university students. Her mother Juana Laurente taught her how to knit, she learnt and made her first pullover. Everyone at university was fascinated about the design and asked where she got that pullover. Patricia was very proud of herself and decided that one day she will create a company that will revolutionize the fashion industry.

Patricia Lopez, a brilliant industrial engineer, who had a deeply love for fashion and professional experience in multinational companies in Peru, decided to put all her expertise into practice in order to bring to reality all the Peruvian magical culture into fashion products.

PERUVIAN CULTURE AND TRADITION

Later in the 90s, Patricia Lopez married Jose Zegarra and together they went for a trip across Peru. They visited many iconic places and explored the whole country. On that trip she fell in love with the Peruvian nature, people and culture. She was totally impressed by the diversity and all the beautiful things Peru has to offer. The Andean landscapes were amazing and the Alpacas running across the fields were so beautiful that there were no words to describe.

Feeling very connected with the people and the nature, she decided to work on a project to improve their quality of living and opportunities. She could not understand how a wonderful country could be so unequal. In that moment she decided to combine her love for fashion and the magic of Peru into a real idea which helps to bring development and lots of opportunities to all Peruvian people.

KOLIBRI ART

The name of the company Kolibri Art was defined after a trip to the Nazca Lines where Patricia saw the picture of the “Colibrí”. The Nazca lines, drawn by our ancestors and only visible from the sky, are enigmatic lines. Until the present, no one knows how they were made. It is still a mystery!

Patricia felt a deep connection with that image and decided to name the company after it. The company Kolibri Art was founded with the vision to bring the Peruvian textile art to the whole world, using premium Peruvian alpaca wool, pima cotton, and natural dyes, like the ones that the millennial Paracas culture used to produce their iconic textiles whose brightness and color have been maintained for over 2000 years. It started with a small team of artisans with Patricia being the designer, her passion drove to deliver beautiful garments which are currently sold in the most exclusive boutiques in Lima.
